A Sudden Career Change Overview

It may seem like the “end of the world” to you, especially after you’ve given EVERYTHING to your employer. Today, you’ve been terminated and it feels like a Mack truck has just run over your body without a thought or care. Did they have a security guard “watch” you clean out your desk and shut-down your computer? After a few years or more, it’s one of those demeaning experiences with BIG employers….. some even provide escort service to your car. Regardless of the years, it’s not a good, warm fuzzy feeling for any of us. With that behind us…. let’s begin to think about “reality” and how it may just be your BEST day. I know, you’re seeing a DARK …

A Startling Fact About The Dangers Of Labeling

Quite often, we use labels on ourselves and others without even realizing that we are doing it. And most often, they are negative. What we don’t realize is how much theses labels can hurt us and others. The challenge is, what ever you state to yourself repetitively, even if you know on a conscious level that it is not true, your subconscious mind believes it. For example, after misplacing something, have you ever said to your self, “I am so stupid.” You know that you are just annoyed but your subconscious takes you seriously. Once your subconscious mind believes something, it sets out to confirm it’s belief and it can self sabotage your efforts to change and grow. In fact, …

A Simple Cure For Anxiety And Depression

Our innate desire is to be happy, and when we move away from it, we experience fear. This fear is actually millions of years old, for it arises from the biological programming of our species. While we may not have to contend with a sabre-toothed tiger on any given day, we still use those very reactions to deal with events looming ahead. We think, “Will I be fired for making that mistake at work?” or “Will I be able to meet the mortgage after I fix the car?” or “Will my health continue to decline?” or “Will my relationship fall apart after that argument we just fell into?” Running questions with this type of urgency and helplessness trains our brains …

A Scary Thought For Some…

What could be a scary thought for some? How bout’ this–The thought that as a Christian you can do whatever you want……scary? Consider this Bible verse: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” 1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me? That flies in the face of traditional thinking about Christian morals, rights and wrongs–Doesn’t it? You see as Christians we are no longer slaves to the law. In amazing mercy, Jesus was the sacrifice that allowed us to be forgiven of our sins by no work of our own. So that we were no longer subject to trying to live up to …

A Rested Mind Can Improve Your Productivity

Imagine that you’re working late at night on a project due in the morning. Your body is tired and your mind is numb, but this project must get done, so you push on. You continue to work, despite the distinct feeling that the project would be much easier if you went to bed and approached it again in the morning. You feel obligated to do it now, so you stay up until the wee hours of the morning, producing less than desirable work in much more time than it would have taken with a rested mind. This was likely not the wisest move, since not only productivity was lost, but quality as well. Having a rested mind really can make …

Access the Rest of Yourself

Because I have used audio discs for self-hypnosis, I have successfully upgraded the programming in my subconscious mind in several areas. I want to spread the word. Brian Walsh, author of “Unleash your Brilliance” writes, “Some of us spend money and time on maintaining, or even upgrading, our external appearances. Some of us spend money and time on altering our internal attributes. Both are important, aren’t they? “There is this story about a man walking down a street. He was approached by a panhandler. “Any spare change sir?” – The man replied, “Change comes from within.” Yes, change does come from within. It begins by fine-tuning the core beliefs. To use a computer analogy, it is a disk clean, then …

While it is good to listen to advice, eventually you are going to have to …

Absence Makes The Fear Go Yonder!

Emotions are controlled by a combination of reason and action. Man is the only member of the animal kingdom that can control the emotions he experiences on a day to day basis. But, in the negative antagonistic environment we live in, you will need a good healthy dose of something to turn your water into wine. Have you ever heard the saying, “A rolling stone gathers no moss?” Very true not only for a rock, but for you and I also. Let me explain. The longer we dwell on something the more emotions, involving that situation, are digging their roots down deep inside of us. The deeper those roots go the more strangle hold they have on our thinking and …

Abandoned Again—How We Repeat Our Childhood in the Present

The woman on the couch looks up at me miserably, tears in her eyes, as she tells me about her most recent bad relationship. “I’m sick of choosing guys who aren’t there for me. They seem great, they want me, they tell me how terrific I am, then either they have an affair, or turn on me once we are involved, getting that cold look in their eyes. I can see they don’t care after all. I can’t stand this. Why do I do this over and over?” In my work as a therapist, I help people discover repeated patterns. Despite our conscious desire and urgent efforts to make our lives better, we end up feeling the same as we …

A View from the Mountain

For the last seven or eight years I have enjoyed a recreational activity that gives me exercise and satisfies my longing to be in nature. When I Mountain Bike I feel exhilarated, refreshed and proud of myself. Putting on my biking clothes, oiling my bike and riding down the street are the beginning of a ritual that has evolved over time. Within 10 minutes I am immersed in nature on the trails of Mt Tam. After all these years I know them pretty well. As I am riding I enjoy the wildlife, the majestic redwoods, the flowing streams, and am transported to a different world that allows me the opportunity to leave behind all of my worldly concerns. As part …

A Plan Of Attack

Direct Answers – Column for the week of October 28, 2002 I feel I am at the breaking point. I work at a small school and run the office. I do all the financials, secretarial work, and reception duties. While staffing has increased in the classroom, it has not in administration. I shared my feeling with the principal on Monday and clearly stated things must change. Teachers need to take more responsibility for their own tasks instead of bringing them to the office via students or teacher aides. The principal gave a huge lecture to teachers about overloading, looking out for each other, and making sure family life has priority. I felt better. Then he told me he was leaving …

A Place of Sanctuary – Creating Sacred Space

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes health as “the condition of perfect bodily, spiritual, and social well-being and not solely the absence of illness and injury.” As described by the WHO, how many of us feel emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy on a daily basis? We work in structures called ‘sick-buildings;’ we go home to care for families so tired we are almost unable to function; and we increasingly lose our connection with any sense of our place in the universe. How do we reclaim our life and start to think that our life matters and that we are important in the overall scheme of things? One way of doing this is to create our own sanctuary/sacred space. Creating …
